PORTRAIT OF RAMA MBUTHIA AMANDLA
LOOKING FOR ROTIMI
QUEERNESS IS FREEDOM
I was concerned with Black Queer migration. The borders that queer folks travel across in the pursuit of home, of places where one can extend and express desire, joy, contentment.
This video essay is a snippet in a queer timeline: when one owns up to who they are, to claim personhood under one’s own personhood.
This video poem and accompanying portraits were created to celebrate and highlight the beauty of Ramah, the power of Amandla and the person behind Mbuthia.
This piece of digital art takes a fragmented form to explore how splicing and repetition are the strategies that we use to become, to be. Just like learning a word requires mouthing it.
Here is a portrait of Ramah Mbuthia Amandla.
